Ace the Squadron Officer School SOS 26D – 2026 Edition: Command Your Future with A03 Magic!

The key idea is unity of command for air operations. The COMAFFOR is the officer commanding the Air Force component in a joint force, while the JFACC is the joint force air component commander responsible for planning and executing air operations across all services. When the Air Force provides the overwhelming majority of forces—i.e., the preponderance of assets—the same individual typically serves in both roles. Having one person as both COMAFFOR and JFACC ensures streamlined decision-making, coherent air strategy, and unified control over all air actions, without cross-service disagreements that could slow or complicate operations.

If Navy or other-service assets dominate, or if a coalition or multinational arrangement requires a different command structure, the JFACC task may be assigned to someone from the other service or a different commander, distinct from the COMAFFOR. The assignment by a national command authority can set roles, but the condition that makes one person hold both roles is specifically the predominance of Air Force assets.
